How to export a GEDCOM file from RootsMagic
RootsMagic exports to GEDCOM from its File menu and lets you choose exactly which people go into the file.
Steps
- Open your database in RootsMagic.
- Open the File menu and choose Export.
- Choose GEDCOM as the format and select everyone, or only the ancestors of one person.
- Untick notes, sources and media if you like; the poster does not use them.
- Save the .ged file and open it here.
Good to know
- RootsMagic can also pull your branch from FamilySearch before you export, which is the easiest way to get a FamilySearch tree onto a poster.
- Menu names can change between versions. Look for Export, Share or GEDCOM in the File or Tree menu.
Turn the file into a poster
Open your .ged file in the poster maker. It reads the file in your browser, suggests the person at the center and shows a fan chart straight away. Switch to a pedigree chart or a descendant chart, then see it on a wall in 3D before you order.
